The Park County Office of Emergency Management is pleased to announce that it will be hosting Citizen Emergency Response Team (CERT) training in the Bailey area in October 2011.

CERT training teaches individuals and families how to better prepare themselves and their communities for disasters and emergencies. The curriculum includes classes on selecting preparedness supplies, family emergency planning, recognizing natural and human-caused hazards, fire prevention, an introduction to first aid, and terrorism awareness. The course capstone is participant planning and response to a simulation of a local emergency.

The CERT training will be held on Saturday and Sunday, October 15th and 16th at the Search and Rescue building located just south of Bailey on U.S. Highway 285. The class will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and attendance on both days is necessary to complete the activities. There is no charge to attend and everyone over the age of 18 is welcome to participate; children under the age of 18 are welcome if they are with a parent or guardian.

Although I'm a resident of Jefferson County, I took CERT training in Park County several years ago. It's great training and you'll meet other members of the community. During my CERT training, several of us were from Jeffco and were all welcomed and treated equally.

Same here ShilohLady, we live in Jeffco but are members of Park county CERT. We felt more in common with Park county than the Arvada/Jeffco CERT due to proximity and the same mountain area issues.

I took my CERT training in Denver before it was available in Park County. The important thing is to get the training, it is very worthwhile!

I highly recommend it.

Remember the REAL first responders are you and your neighbors. (No offence to Firefighters & Police, it does take time for you all to get there. Just a fact.)

In a wide spread disaster, CERT may be the only ones available for some time.

About CERT

Following a major disaster, first responders who provide fire and medical services will not be able to meet the demand for these services. Factors as number of victims, communication failures, and road blockages will prevent people from accessing emergency services they have come to expect at a moment's notice through 911. People will have to rely on each other for help in order to meet their immediate life saving and life sustaining needs.

First, present citizens the facts about what to expect following a major disaster in terms of immediate services. Second, give the message about their responsibility for mitigation and preparedness. Third, train them in needed life saving skills with emphasis on decision making skills, rescuer safety, and doing the greatest good for the greatest number. Fourth, organize teams so that they are an extension of first responder services offering immediate help to victims until professional services arrive.

CERT is about readiness, people helping people, rescuer safety, and doing the greatest good for the greatest number. CERT is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where citizens will be initially on their own and their actions can make a difference. Through training, citizens can manage utilities and put out small fires; treat the three killers by opening airways, controlling bleeding, and treating for shock; provide basic medical aid; search for and rescue victims safely; and organize themselves and spontaneous volunteers to be effective.

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

Unfortunately, due to the low registration numbers, this class has been cancelled.

You certainly missed out on a great opportunity!

Dang!

I'm afraid we need another local emergency to wake some people up to the need to be prepared.
