Coffee seems to have become as synonymous with America as apple pie. And research is showing our java habit may not be so bad after all. Plenty of health and other benefits are hiding out in your morning cup 'o Joe, studies suggest.

For instance, in a study published in 2010 in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, researchers found that regular coffee drinkers have a 39 percent decreased risk of head and neck cancer.

And if you need more than a physical boost (and you're a gal), coffee may do the trick. A study published in the Sept. 26, 2011, issue of Archives of Internal Medicine showed that women who drank two to three cups of caffeinated coffee a day were 15 percent less likely to develop depression over a 10-year period compared with those who drank one cup of coffee or less per week. Other research has shown drinking coffee may counter cognitive decline associated with neurodegenerative disorders.

National Coffee Day: where to find free coffee
National Coffee Day features several chains offering the beverage for free. If you miss National Coffee Day, other stores are offering coupon deals.

Thursday is National Coffee Day in the United States, and in celebration, certain stores are handing out free cups of one of the world’s most widely consumed beverages.

If none of those options sound quite like your cup of tea (or coffee), there are deals to be had elsewhere. The Caribou Coffee chain is offering a "buy one, get one free" deal on beverages with this online coupon. Barnes and Noble members can also get the same deal on the Starbucks coffee sold in its stores, with this coupon, valid until Oct. 5.

Publix supermarkets are also in on the celebration, offering a "buy one, get one free" deal on 12-ounce bags of Eight O’ Clock coffee all this week.

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill

I consumed my normal quart of strong black coffee today between 0600 and 1100 like I do everyday. Even brewed it up in my own kitchen and took it to work with me in my thermos along with my breakfast and lunch. For me every day is coffee day!

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

"Any man who thinks he can be happy and prosperous by letting the Government take care of him; better take a closer look at the American Indian." - Henry Ford

Corruptissima re publica plurimae leges; When the Republic is at its most corrupt the laws are most numerous. - Publius Cornelius Tacitus
