The commercials are to educate the public about who they are--they are regular people. All the Mormons I know, and I know ALOT, are kind, decent, motivated, lovely people. My mom told me when Kennedy was running there was a push to educate people about Catholics and how they were ordinary people too.
I've seen 3 different organizations saturated (and I mean - crawling around in every corner) with LDS adherents. They divert the organization from its core purpose/mission. I think it's fundamentally bad for the organization.
There's a difference between observing your faith, and using an organization other than the church to perpetuate your faith.
My hunch is - give the LDS church the presidency - and every other member of the cabinet will be Mormon.

Your mom told you? Boy do I feel old.
There was a prevailing opinion that Kennedy couldn't win the election because some people wouldn't vote for him because he was Catholic and that if he were elected the president would be controlled by the Pope, from Rome.
