I happen to think this is really cool.

Indeed it is. Just to look at the various bowling ball compositions and weightings that allow you to use a bowling ball to better adjust to varying lane conditions is a huge difference. Bowled professionally for a very short time before college and getting drafted. Thought, I'd try toe professional ranks again after the military, but my focus became school and back in the 60's there was little money in bowling. Until you had sponsors, it was costly to stay on tour.

But this thread isn't about bowling in genreal or about bowling history. It's about your son. How old is he now?

I used a fingertip resin ball but now the big bowlers use strategy with the oil patterns. It is a bit crazy.

It's always been about oil patterns and being able to adapt either through speed changes, taking a different line, or bowling ball changes. I got bit by drastic lane condition changes in a bowling tournament at Fort Belviour. I led the 36 game qualifying with a 212 average. Then for the ten man roll off, they oilded the lanes so much that my ball backed up. It took me 7 games before I found the right angle and I ended up 8th. Lesson learned.

The one that wins is the one that can adjust to the conditions.

Yes indeed. One thing I never was good at doing was bowling from the right side of the lane when oil conditions warranted it. That failure on my part cost me more than one tournament.

BTW what does your son intend to do with his bowling? Will it continue to be recreational or does he have his sights set on more. Does he bowl in a scratch league?

You know he is not sure. The scratch guys want a 210 average.

I could never bowl on the wall.

That is quite the scratch league. Not even the pros necessarily average 210.
