In Michigan a friend that had a deck stain business had great results with Wolman's(?). I expect results vary with climate. I do not remember the URL but he had a deck stain forum bookmarked. It was a great resource. This is google results for "deck stain forum".
THX NCG. Very helpful. I am mainly interested in what my neighbors have used with success.
The stains we have used in the past have had no gloss so I am wondering if a glossy stain and finish might help.
According to Consumer Reports, for longest life go with a "solid stain". But that's basicly painting your deck.
Their top rated solid stain is Behr Solid Color Deck Fence & Siding at Home Depot. They give it a 79 pt rating and say it still looks very good after 9 years. $27
Among semi-transparent stains tops is Sikkens Cetol SRD with 39 pts ($40) or Olympic Maximum Deck with 35 pts ($35). They look good up to 3 years.
For clear sealers it's Thompson's WaterSeal Advanced Waterproofer, 34 pts ($25) good after 3 years.
Still in testing but very good after 3 years are Behr Premium Semi-Transparent Weatherproofing Wood Stain ($35) and Behr Premium Transparent Weatherproofing Wood Finish ($33). So if you just want a transparent, that last Behr might be the way to go, though it's pricey.
Thats what I use, Behr solid. Good for about 5 years facing the sun at 9000'
I like to use a sanding block too for roughing up the surface a little, no pressure washing.
