U.S. FOREST SERVICE URGES FIRE SAFETY THIS HOLIDAY WEEKEND
PUEBLO, CO., May 23, 2012…Careless human acts have caused nearly half of the wildfires on the Pike and San Isabel National Forests, Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands (PSICC) in the past decade. This is well above average for the Western U.S.
“Now, more than ever, it is important for the public to be aware of any activities that may cause a wildfire,” said Ralph Bellah, PSICC Fire Prevention Officer. “Fire managers are concerned about the large number of abandoned campfires found during patrols,” he said.
Typically, the U.S. Forest Service discovers over 25 unattended or abandoned campfires during weekend patrols. These could lead to large fires that threaten communities, cause evacuations, and threatened the safety of a firefighting force.
If campfires are authorized in your area, there are important rules to follow when building a campfire. Campfires have been one of the leading sources of human-caused wildfires. Keep them very small, never leave them unattended, and make sure embers are “Cool to the Touch” before leaving the area.
The Memorial Day holiday weekend is a peak time for visitors to public lands. Be aware there may be fire restrictions in place. It is important to “Know Before You Go”, determine the current conditions and restrictions where you expect to visit, and plan ahead.
Thanks for the friendly reminder. Better yet, don't have a campfire and enjoy the outdoors.
