Bear and 2 cubs in mid bird section of Burland

I have been asked to post this separately. Friend sent pix and I got to see them on the way in to do a fire watch.

Medium brown colored black bear and two cubs in the mid bird section of Burland. She has not learned to stay away from homes. She will run if you make noise. She tends to leave her cubs behind while she looks for food so she may be seen alone.

One person has already had a very up close experience by accident. With the wind they couldn't hear each other. The bear ran off and all ended well.

Be careful when walking out the door of your home.

Saw mama bear early this morning moving at a quick pace down the mountain. Something must have spooked her. Was lucky to see her. Right time, right place.

Curious what you mean by "do a fire watch"? Are you with the USFS or local fire department?

Neither. A friend who sponsors my trips to Ecuador through a nonprofit has an informal fire watch on private property and the adjoining national forest on the east side of Burland which I volunteer for, usually on red flag, dry or windy days.

Today we hiked the North Fork of the South Platte River picking up trash along the way and checking that all campfires were really out. USFS rarely gets in there to do that.

My way of paying back. It is such a lovely hike, hardly like any kind of work.
