What tiny insect makes little divets in the dirt

Tried to take a pic of this insect but they didn't come out. It looks gray 1/4 to 1/2 inch and digs out dirt leaving little divets. Maybe works mostly at night as the little holes are often seen in the morning. Thanks. Probably has been asked and answered before.

Yeah, ant lion. Tickle the side of the cone towards the bottom gently with a tiny stick and you might be able to tease one into striking at the stick.

Hours of fun when I was a kid and easilly amused. We used to see who could catch the biggest ant lion.

Hmm. We, on the other hand, used to throw ants in and watch the ant lions grab them.

But then you just get to see the business end of the ant lion. If you're good at it, when they strike the stick you can pull 'em out of the dirt and get a good look at 'em.

If they were bigger, they could star in a horror movie set in a remote town in the desert.

Bigger? Just add some nearby atomic testing and you've got yourself a B horror movie.

I used a little stick to stir around at the bottom of the cone and find them and push them out of the dirt.

Oh sure, if you lack finesse you can do it that way

Google "ant lion picture" -- it'll give you shivers.
