How many people are ready to 'bug out'?

Thought about this the other day when I seen a guy on TV that had to leave so quick he had to go to a used clothing store to get a shirt. If you live in the middle of town, but then look at Estes Park, you might be safer but they evacuated all of Manitou Springs and maybe anything is possible. How quick would you be ready? If you had a real trust worthy friend or relative in the big city maybe take some things there. Some of the things I would pack now and maybe rent a small storage unit, metal ones, in a populated area of Denver would be:

Guns and ammo. I don't need all that I have available right now anyway. Keep a couple cheaper ones available.
Cash, silver and jewelry. Would you have time to remember all of that if the cops were standing there telling you to get out?
Titles of all of the vehicles. Files and important legal papers. Birth Certs.
Happen to have a ATV worth over $6000. and really with the conditions the way they are I can cancel any thoughts of that for awhile.
Extra vehicles. I personally have too many to just get in and drive out of here without wanting to come back and get more expensive ones in another trip. What can you afford to do with out or loose in a fire. Any collector cars? Load the vehicle up and take to a storage unit. Be sure to pay the rent but rent is much cheaper than loosing a vehicle worth several thousand.
Picture albums. Dig them out in November.

Other things maybe to think of:
Pack a suitcase ready to stay a week somewhere. If you take important, can't do without, pills maybe keep them in the suitcase.
I only use a laptop and every night will be putting it in a bag by the door ready to split.
Oh and don't forget the pets.

Anybody got any other thoughts?

We have finally decided to get a safe deposit box.....thinking ahead to vacation where we will be gone for 3 weeks.....even a fire proof safe may not be enough. Pictures of everything on CD, plus the backup to the computer....all important papers.....they need to be somewhere safe. Otherwise, as long as we and the pups are safe there isn't anything I need. Stuff....even the family stuff we have inherited, is replaceable. We and the pups are not. I've been through this before.....all I took when we evacuated were the critters and a file drawer of papers. That was easier than trying to decide what is important and what is not. If we need to start over, so be it......I think Walmart can probably provide anything we would need in the meantime.

Have a look here --> <!-- l --><a class="postlink-local" href=" 285bound.com/Forums/viewtopic.php?f=139&...ilit=bug+out#p205478 " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">viewtopic.php?f=139&t=19027&p=205478&hilit=bug+out#p205478<!-- l --> The question has been asked before and it makes sense to keep asking, wildfires are a part of living in the mountains and IMHO there is no such thing as being over prepared.

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

My suggestions, DRY RUNS.. Set a timer on your phone or watch , allow yourself so many mins. to grab what you can and go. Maybe do this a couple times and see what happens.

Label your cat or dog carriers, name , address and phone number if you can't grab them somebody else might and the more info. on them the better chance you have of getting them back.

Keep what you want to take packed and by the door you plan on going out. Not everybody has safe deposit boxes and the like.

Plan where you will meet up with your family members/neighbors.

Family has been doing drills, learning how to work as a team but if push comes to shove, save themselves. Go Box by the door with a list of what needs to be added.

Also a wet towel or blanket, no polyester, if last ditch effort means running through smoke/fire.

FWIW, check out woot.com today - they have 64Gb thumb drives for $30. I have a couple of this same model from a previous sale on woot, and they work great. I have all our important info (plus pictures, etc.) on a couple of these and have them locked in my desk at work. That way if we weren't home to grab the hard drive that the info is on we have an off-site backup.

We had a gut check last month with a forest fire right across the street.

Adjustments have been made - and I'm sure more are to come.
