After joining the effort on the High Park Fire, our Elk Creek Firefighters have returned home and some are now on their way out to the Parker Peak Fire in South Dakota. Below are some of the pictures and comments they shared on
their Facebook page
recently, and below that is a message from Chief McLaughlin.
Thank you Elk Creek Fire Dept for all your hard work and dedication, and time away from your families! Welcome home!
This High Park fire photo by Elk Creek Firefighter Jacob Ware has to be one of the best I've seen. Suitable for framing. Makes me feel pride in our department every time I see it.
On June 29th Good news! The crew of Brush Truck 452 has returned from the High Park fire. They're back in district, safe and sound. Welcome home Chief McLaughlin, Firefighter Ryan Tinkey and Firefighter Scott Logan. It's good to have you guys back!

On June 26th Good news! One of the Elk Creek crews that have been fighting the High Park fire has returned safe and sound. Elk Creek Firefighters Mitch Hartzler, Jacob Ware and Alex Parks returned this evening around 9:00 p.m. They are tired, happy to be back and looking forward to reuniting with their families. We are glad they are back with us, and grateful for their hard work, defending homes and property on the High Park. Thanks guys. Hope you enjoy a much-deserved rest.
From June 22 Elk Creek Firefighter Logan Scott enjoys a “candlelight dinner” on the High Park Fire. A lukewarm MRE on the back of a Type 6 Brush Truck.

A note from Chief Bill McLaughlin
Hello all,
As you should know, Brush 452 and Engine 433 have returned from the High Park fire. Brush 451 was made available yesterday afternoon, and was dispatched within a hours to the Parker Peak fire in South Dakota.
Elk Creek Firefighter – EMT – Wildland Coordinator Jacob Ware, Firefighter – Paramedic Stephanie Faber and Firefighter Jeff Zechman are staffing the brush truck.
This fire season has already surpassed all but one season in Colorado’s history for acreage burned, and is likely not only to be the worst on record, but to be the worst in the history of the entire rocky mountain region. The loss of homes, and lives have already passed any other year. This unfortunately includes 4 National Guardsmen who were killed this week in the C130 crash in South Dakota.
When we needed help to protect our community in the Lower North Fork Fire, assistance came from all over Colorado and from far beyond. We should be proud now to be helping other communities such as Masonville and Rustic near Fort Collins, Guernsey Wyoming and now Hot Springs South Dakota. This includes all of you who are doing your part to help here at home. I wanted to share with all of you the support and thanks of many members of the community who have called, emailed of otherwise expressed their gratitude for all you are doing.
We will be using the experience our firefighters have gained working on these incidents to improve our brush and engine operations here at home.
I hope everyone has a safe, enjoyable (and quiet) Fourth of July, and thanks again for all you do!
Chief Bill McLaughlin
