Staunton State Park is tentatively scheduled to open in October 2012. In addition to providing new trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, the park promises to be a premier destination for rock climbing.
Elk Creek Fire Department is sharpening its high angle search and rescue skills so as to be ready to meet the needs of those who visit the park.

In Chile where I volunteer I am part of search and rescue team using mtn climbing skills and other training when necessary, although that isn't my main mission when I am there. Sometimes I think the actual on the mountain rescue is the easier part and the harder part is the actually carry of the person down the mountain if not accessible by helicopter by many of the rescue team. Lots of skills utilized there as well.
Since you are much closer it is likely that you will be first responders and your training well utilized. Thank you.
