ECFD Chief McLaughlin to walk 12-hours in Relay for Life

Greetings,

I have spoken and emailed about the Relay for Life event at Conifer High School previously. I have not pressed the issue, as it would have conflicted with the proposed Safety Fair. As the Safety Fair has been cancelled, I would ask if anyone would assist in the Relay for Life event.

To clear up some apparent confusion, the Relay is not a race type event. It is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, started many years ago when an individual got donors to sponsor him to walk around a track for 24 hours nonstop. The event has evolved since then, into an event where teams of individuals take turns walking around the track overnight. The event now includes live music, food and other events as well.

The Relay for Life is the main fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, which funds cancer research and assistance to cancer patients. As such it is a very worthwhile cause. As of right now, it looks like there will be around 200 participants form Conifer and Evergreen involved, including the JeffCo Sheriff’s team.

I would like to ask if anyone is willing to help out by being willing to help raise donations (or make a donation), or to come out to the event as a team member. The target donation is $100 per person, but any amount would be helpful. One tradition at these events is to put out luminaria honoring a cancer victim or survivor, for which they request a $10 donation.

While it is an overnight event, it’s understood that those of us who no longer pull all-nighters will not be on the track at 2 am (maybe even home in bed)…but if you’re up for the challenge, there is one participant who is going to run the track for 12 hours straight. That would not be me.

So, if you can help, let me know, and have a great weekend!

Sincerely,
Chief Bill McLaughlin
