From the Flume, Staunton Park to open probably late October. Should be another good place to hike in the Banana belt this winter besides Pine. Yippie!

"Staunton State Park, northwest of Shaffers Crossing, is set to open in October.

Colin Chisholm, a park ranger for Staunton State Park, said construction of trails, a parking area, and picnic sites have been the main focus of the first phase of construction, which began in April."

I'd rather hike where I don't have to pay admission.

That's a good point, forgot about that. I guess I would pay $3-$4 just to check it out. The problem with the state park pass is getting one for every vehicle, and they are up to what- $70 now? Should keep the crowds down though! LOL

I don't mind paying the $4-$5 buck once in a while. Jefferson Lake/11 mile canyon are spots that are worth it in my opinion.

It's nice that this is so close. I had been waiting for some call backs regarding volunteer work on trails and such. I spoke with a StateParks person several months ago that said there would be open dates to allow volunteer access.

I would say any volunteers should get a free parking pass to Staunton at least, or even the whole state system.

I think it is 7.00 per day pass like all the rest of the State Parks.
