On February 10, 2013 at 2357 hours the Park County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team was activated after information was relayed from the field to the Sheriff’s Office Command staff that a man had donned a bullet proof vest and had barricaded himself in his home. Reports indicated that the man was heavily armed.

SWAT officers set up a perimeter around the residence in the Friendship Ranch subdivision in Bailey Colorado.

SWAT Commander, Captain Mark Hancock established communications with the barricaded suspect identified as Lance McCabe. Tactical plans were made and approved by Sheriff Wegener and Undersheriff Gore. Intelligence verified that McCabe’s wife had gotten her children out of the house and they were safe.

During negotiations with McCabe SWAT officers reported that a gun shot had been fired inside the residence. As communications were ongoing at the time of the gunshot negotiators learned that the firearm discharge was accidental. Negotiations with McCabe utilized his family, and friends, and continued for several hours. Though negotiation, McCabe agreed to surrender to the Sheriff’s Office and was taken into custody at 1:53am.

McCabe was charged with Prohibited use of a weapon CRS 18-12-106 (1) (d) and Child Abuse 18-6-401(1) (a). He is currently being held in thePark County Jail on a court ordered no bond hold. This case is still under investigation.
