How do you celebrate Mother's Day?

Any traditions, or do you just sit back and enjoy the day as it rolls on by? :)

This is one of my favorite Spice Girls songs, and wasn't one of their big hits.

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

I visited my Mom's grave for Mother's Day this year. Brought her a stone from her front yard to place on the marker and a vase of flowers from her backyard. It was nice. She loved to paint flowers, much more than humans, could never get the eyes right.

That's a nice way to honor your mom FH, I'm sorry to hear she's left this world already. Eyes are tough to capture. Was your mom a fan of Georgia O'Keeffe by chance? Her flower paintings are what make her my favorite artist.

We sent my mom flowers as we do every year, and I gave her a call to catch up. Sadly, we learned that the body of one of my cousins' sons was found that day after a week of searching for him following a canoeing accident. He was 24, his fiancee survived the accident.

Life is so short sometimes, live it to the fullest and celebrate those you love.

For those like me who'd never before dug into the history of the creation of Mother's Day, this was fascinating to learn. The woman, Ann Jarvis, for whom the holiday was signed into law by Woodrow Wilson is an example we should all aspire to emulate. Her daughter's struggles to keep the holiday from being commercialized after advocating to create it were enlightening to learn as well. Wishing you all peace and joy this Mother's Day.
:hmdsign:

Jarvis was a dynamic woman who saw needs in her community and found ways to meet them. In 1858, while pregnant with her sixth child, Jarvis began Mothers' Day Work Clubs in the towns of Grafton, Pruntytown, Philippi, Fetterman, and Webster to improve health and sanitary conditions. Jarvis' clubs sought to provide assistance and education to families in order to reduce disease and infant mortality. These clubs raised money to buy medicine and to hire women to work in families where the mother suffered from tuberculosis or other health problems. They developed programs to inspect milk long before there were state requirements.

During the American Civil War (1861–1865), sentiment in western Virginia was sharply divided between north and south. In 1863, this culminated when the western part of the state broke away from Virginia and formed the new state of West Virginia, which was loyal to the Union. Jarvis' Mothers' Day Work Clubs altered their mission to meet the changing demands brought about by war. Ann Jarvis urged the clubs to declare neutrality and to provide aid to both Confederate and Union soldiers. Under her guidance, the clubs fed and clothed soldiers from both sides who were stationed in the area. When typhoid fever and measles broke out in the military camps, Jarvis and her club members nursed the suffering soldiers from both sides at the request of a commander.

Jarvis' efforts to keep the community together continued after the Civil War ended. She and her club members planned a "Mothers Friendship Day" for soldiers from both sides and their families at the Taylor County Courthouse in Pruntytown to help the healing process. Despite threats of violence, Jarvis successfully staged the event in 1868. She shared with the veterans a message of unity and reconciliation. Bands played "Dixie" and the "Star Spangled Banner" and the event ended with everyone, north and south, joining to sing "Auld Lang Syne." This effective and emotional event reduced many to tears. It showed the community that old animosities were destructive and must end.
