The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is seeing such high attrition rates among its uniformed personnel, mainly due to stagnant salaries, that some unit division chiefs are being asked to return to street patrol duty.

Sheriff Ted Mink said he hopes to impress on the county commissioners, who make budget decisions, the need for more money for salaries.

In 2012, the department lost 36 deputies. So far this year, 28 have quit, according to Mark Techmeyer, public information officer.

Mink said the department is anticipating an 8.5 percent attrition rate, which he attributed to deputies leaving for better salaries at other agencies. "We have not been able to adjust the salaries in five years," Mink said.

According to county spokeswoman Kathryn Heider, the commissioners will begin their budget discussions, meeting with individual departments and the public, starting Oct. 16. Mink will present the department budget request for 2014 to commissioners on Oct. 21.

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill

Generally speaking, Parkco has had this problem for a long time......we usually lose personnel
to JEFFCO......so this IS dis concerning....I always thought JEFFCO had the money (or is that
Douglas?)......anymore, from what I have read, NO ONE has the money,so this trend will continue and probably worsen.....JMO

Photo....as a source of info. look at the JeffCO Saleries paper provided to its citizens (copy available at the "Palace" and in the local papers recently. MOST of the positions are JCSO......take a deputy s
salary....multiply by 12 (these are monthly salaries) and then 1.4 for benefits and easily a deputy gets $100K a year......what am I missing ? Does Mink have attrition DATA and reasons why he cannot keep the officers other that $$$$$.....as in the military salaries do not drive retention
the culture, a desire to serve and LEADERSHIP are the real motivators.

New leadership may help but more $$$$ and more officers is a ruse......FYI from the data THE SHERIFF gets $165,000 with benefits (using 1.4 multiplier).....perhaps a complete INDEPENDENT review of the salaries in the entire force is prudent.........and maybe an outsider would be wise in the next elections.......always helps. The review should look at ALL equipment, subcontracts, staff, training and consumables.....as a start.

You couldn't be more wrong. Jeffco won't consider Parkco personnel, for lots of reasons.

Look....folks these employees work for the taxpayers.....the taxpayers must be involved or the fleecing will continue....be it cops, firepeople, clerks, teachers....

Has anyone here EVER seen the bureaucrats cut expenditures and LOWER taxes....ever....ever......help me here....I would vote on a slate of commissioners running on cutting the size of the clerical (cops, cooks, paper pushers, .....all same basically) force and LOWERING taxes.......so I may not vote.....again...

You probably know MORE than I do.....several years back, I was told,by someone in the know,
that Parkco R&B was "training ground" for operators and when they had enough experience they
moved on to Jeffco.....more pay, more everything......guess it's changed....(we need a chin
scratching emoticon)

I definitely know MORE about it than you do. Training in most areas in ParkCo is lacking at best, and in regards to the Sheriff's department (which this thread is about) is beyond lacking. There's nothing WONDERFUL about ParkCo employees that has JeffCo salivating to lure them away.

The idea that ParkCo is a training ground for JeffCo is nonsense.
