VL - your're right about those old electric blankets. I had one catch fire while I was sleeping under it. It took me 30 years to ever sleep with one again.
How about a good old fashioned hot water bottle? A couple of those would likely do the trick if they were covered with a couple of layers of old flannel pillowcases for insulation.
