Oenophile Alert: Wine Shortage Looms

The world is running short of wine, says Morgan Stanley. Is it also running out of corks?

A report released by the Australian Consumer and Beverage branch of Morgan Stanley earlier this month says that the world has gone from a wine surplus of more than 600 million unit cases in 2004 to near parity, now, of supply and demand. That elimination of the surplus, according to the report, has been the result of "an ongoing structural reduction in capacity."

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

I could care less about a shortage of corks - screw caps are better closures. But a shortage of wine - that's an emergency! Sounds like it's time to buy my vineyard and start producing my own!

The nice thing about wine is how much hoarding goes on. Just break into your or someone else's cellar.

The story takes a very limited view of all of the options and it's based on information from an Australian firm. Last time I bought beer there was plenty of Mad Dog 20/20, Night Train, and Thunderbird on the shelves and they all had handy easy off meal screw caps.

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

My brother just bought a vacation home in the wine growing region of Missouri...WTH!
I think he was taken, but he insists that Missouri makes some nice wines. I suspect the moonshine is probably higher quality.

I'm afraid Napa's going to go to crap in the next few decades - I'm looking north at Washington (the Cab Francs from there are to die for) or Vancouver.

The number of wineries springing up in states all over this country are staggering - I couldn't believe how many I passed in Indiana on my last drive home to Ohio. There are a few gems to find for sure, but it's a learning curve that many will unfortunately never make an effort to truly overcome to make great wines. I'm happy to keep an open mind and try 'em though! :)

You must not have had a Quilceda Creek Cabernet (the Champoux and Kilpsun vineyards produce the best fruit), or tasted a Cayuse Syrah yet then! :) They easily equal and surpass the best Napa reds. If you can find any, give 'em a try - you'll be pleasantly surprised. My favorite wine shop, Pike and Western Wine Shop in Pike's Place, gets a small batch of Quilceda Creek every year that you can put in for a bottle or two of if you are on their mailing list. So far, I've only accidentally lucked out and had a friend stumble across some Cayuse at a wine shop in Montana - I'm still waiting to get on their mailing list for wines. In the meantime, I get Walla Walla Vintners Cabs and Seven Hills wines to tide me over. :)
