Atlanta Lamborghini dealer Ed Bolian used a souped up a 2004 Mercedes to speed into the record books October 20.

Midtown Manhattan to Redondo Beach: Bolian and two friends took the classic route first taken in the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash of the 1970s.

Bolian's time of 28 hours 50 minutes beats the previous record set by Alex Roy in 2006 when he made the trip in 31 hours 4 minutes by over two hours.

With a distance of 2,813.7 miles, Bolian and his two-man team did the Cannonball Run at an average of 98 miles per hour.

I don't see how anyone can consider it an accomplishment when they spent 29 hours breaking the law, putting other people in danger and then bragging about it.

It sort of speaks volumes to our self-obsessed society.

I think it is awesome. My Dad did the Columbus to Denver run in a 98 Olds in the early 70's. 18 hours, about 90 miles an hour average. Didn't kill anyone.

I thought Richard Rawlings, from Discovery's Fast 'n Loud , was the previous record holder. Article only mentions Alex Roy.

A veteran of transcontinental road rallies, Richard has won the Gumball 3000 and the Bullrun — twice. He is the current world record holder in the Cannonball Run and was even recognized by Jay Leno for this achievement, having broken the record that stood since 1979. He covered the 2,811 miles from New York to Los Angeles in 31 hours and 59 minutes with an average speed of 87.6 miles per hour.

Roy did it in 31 hours 4 minutes - maybe he broke Rawling's record?

that's what I was thinking, too. but Roy's run was in 2006, and Rawlings' in 2007. I'm guessing that these records are all unofficial. still pretty cool, though.
