"Uncle Otis, What Was a Video Rental Store?"

It's a conversation that we'll all likely have at some point in time with our younger relations. Remember when your Mom, Dad, Aunt, or Uncle explained other technological wonders like telegrams, radio, and electricity to you and what life was like before them? Man, I suddenly feel really old...

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

How about the noise a modem makes? Or using a cassette tape deck to load programs? The amazing thing about Blockbuster is how short its reign was. When I was in high school, mom and pop video stores were just starting, 30 years if that. I think technology will continue to obsolete itself quickly. Wheras the telegraph had a good 100 years in the US and only shut down in India this year. How long before CD's are gone? Already new cars don't have CD players.

Ok, now I feel really old... I wrote some of my first programs using punch cards. Some of the first training computers I used in the Navy were loaded using perforated paper tape. I took several milk crates of 8 track tapes and vinyl records (33 1/3's, 45's, and ten inch records) to my little brother's last garage sale and had several kids ask me what they were. Youth is wasted on the young I tell ya!

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.
