How To Make Your Cell Phone Charge Last in an Emergency

There are some good tips in here that I hadn't thought of, so I wanted to share. We don't often have our power go out for days during emergencies like they due with massive snowstorms in the midwest or hurricanes on the coast, but it's good to know because they had to cut power for several hours last year during some of our fires, and you can share this with friends and family who do live in those riskier areas. Click through to the article for more details.

Your power is about to go out—here’s how to make your cell phone last until it comes back on
By Christopher Mims @mims February 12, 2014

1. Fully charge your laptop, and save that charge for your phone.
2. When the power goes out, turn off all the radios on your phone you’re not using: WiFi, Bluetooth, etc.
3. Keep your phone plugged into a charger until the power goes out.
4. Turn off all “push” notifications on your phone.
5. Restart your phone to kill all the apps that are running now.
6. Turn down the brightness on your screen.
7. Send text messages instead of making phone calls.
8. Borrow a cell phone car charger.
9. Do not use your phone.

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill

 I see my southern Facebook friends not knowing when their power will be turned back on but they are still taking pictures and posting them on Facebook with their remaining battery life.
I always have to remind myself to put my phone on airplane mode as soon as I get out of the foothills because roaming kills my battery life.

The only way I know the power is going to go out, is when I hear the chainsaw fire up. It doesnt happen every time but I do prepare. Best tip is to remember you can charge off the car battery, and the land line also works during an outage

We are "old fashion",archaic hold outs....we ALWAYS maintain a land line for emergency reasons.
(just seems like an obvious thing to do)....but then we are NOT "plugged in" like most of the
general populace. (THAT is a a purposeful decision for us)

:YeahThat:

Pay a visit to Harbor Freight (or harborfreight.com) and have a look at the solar panels they have in stock. Add on a voltage inverter and a couple of NiMH batteries and you might have enough power to charge a phone, laptop, or low voltage lights.

Another source for power fixes when the grid is down can be found here: http://laserhacker.com/ Interesting stuff posted there and I have built a few of the designs with great success.

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.
