Working Group Members Sought to Explore Public Recreational Shooting Range Options

In 2013, the Board of County Commissioners directed staff to conduct a feasibility analysis of public and private properties for a public shooting range in our County. Using established criteria from the Sport Shooting Management Partnership, all candidate locations had challenges. In an update to the Board of County Commissioners that was held on January 28th, staff conveyed findings and recommended that a working group be formed to further explore possibilities. The working group would be a multi-faceted and diverse stakeholder group, facilitated by Jefferson County Mediation Services. The mission will be to further define a scope for the project, including location, operation logistics and potential funding.

The Working Group for a Public Recreational Shooting Range would be formed from representatives from County Planning & Zoning, Jeffco Sheriff, Jeffco Open Space staff, Jeffco Open Space Advisory Committee, Denver Mountain Parks, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, US Forest Service, PLAN Jeffco and three interested citizens ideally representing the north, central and south geographical sections of the County.

Citizens interested in participating in the working group should submit a letter of interest to by end of business, Monday, February 24, 2014 to be considered. Working team members will be selected by March 1, 2014 and notified of the kickoff meeting to be held shortly thereafter. The Working Group will meet monthly or more frequently as needed in order to report findings to the Board of County Commissioners by July 15, 2014.

This is a great idea. It would be great to have an organized place for locals and down streamers to shoot instead of informal ranges where people might not realize where their bullets are landing.
