JEFFERSON COUNTY - Four students were taken to the hospital and 24 were treated on the scene after they had reactions on the school playground on Monday afternoon at Jefferson County Open School. The school is located at West 10th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard in Lakewood.

St. Anthony's Hospital said three of the patients are in fair condition.

West Metro and Lakewood Police are on the scene investigating.

Two dozen students at a Lakewood school were treated for exposure to an unknown substance Monday afternoon, with four being transported to a hospital for further treatment.

The students at Jefferson County Open School, 7655 W. 10th St., were treated on scene for symptoms similar to an allergic reaction after recess on the playground.

As a precautionary measure students and staff are being evacuated to the First Prebysterian Church at 8210 W. 10th Ave.

West Metro Fire hazmat is on scene to determine the extend of the situation.
The parents of the small number of affected students will be contacted directly by the school.

A representative from Jeffco Schools said the district will immediately inform Jeffco Open parents when and where they can pick up children.

Turned out to be Habanero peppers mixed in with mulch.

Saw it on the news. It makes me wonder how Habanero got mixed in. But maybe it would be a great mix to keep wildlife out of the garden?

Interesting idea Ashley. I should get that mulch for the rabbits.
