USFS proposed Crossons-Longview Project

Such mixed feelings about this one. After reading what happened in the Lower North Fork Fire it makes me wonder about responsibility. This is the USFS instead of the State Forest Service but after USFS failed to monitor the Topaz fire and it got out of control and they still don't monitor their controlled burns can we depend on them to do it right. This affects Burland and a lot of other subdivisions.

There is also a map of the proposed area.

Dear Interested Citizen:

The South Platte Ranger District of the Pike National Forest, proposes to treat up to 10,000 forested acres over a 10 year period to restore portions of the Crossons-Longview Project Area to more historic conditions. The actions would reduce the potential for catastrophic wildfires and improve the resiliency of the ponderosa pine and Douglas-fir dominated forests to insects and disease. The proposed actions would also protect public water supplies, enhance wildlife habitat and improve recreation. The proposed vegetative treatments include thinning, mulching, tree removal, and prescribed burning to reduce forest canopy densities, and ground and ladder fuels in areas across the landscape. The treatments would be accomplished by a combination of hand work using chainsaws and mechanized logging equipment.

The specific purposes of this project are:
• To reduce the potential of catastrophic, high-intensity wildfire with uncontrollable fire behavior, such as active crown fire.
• To reduce the potential that a wildfire would negatively affect public water supplies from subsequent severe flooding and sedimentation.
• To improve forest health, vigor, and resilience to large-scale fire, insects and disease.
• To enhance wildlife habitat through the reduction of the potential for catastrophic wildfires, enhancement of shrublands and aspen, and Pawnee montane skipper habitat.
• To increase recreational opportunities in an area which receives high recreation demand locally and from the Denver Metropolitan Area.

Two public meetings will be held to present the proposed action, the project process and schedule, and to gather comments and concerns from the public. The first meeting will be held on April 2nd from 5:30 -7:00 PM at the Elk Creek Fire Department, 11993 Blackfoot Rd., Conifer, Colorado. The second on April 9th from 5:30-7:00 PM at the Platte Canyon Fire Station #2, 153 Delwood Drive, Bailey, Colorado. If you have any questions about this proposal, or would like more information, please visit our website at http://www.fs.usda.gov/projects/psicc/l ... t/projects or contact Kris Heiny at 303.275.5636.

The public is encouraged to attend a public meeting or submit any comments, concerns or suggestions regarding the proposal to: Crossons-Longview Project, U.S. Forest Service, 19316 Goddard Ranch Court, Morrison, Colorado 80465, on or before April 21, 2014. You can also email your comments to . .

Good luck to all who live in the area. Like playing Russian roulette as to where the next uncontrolled fire shows up.

Quite an extensive project over a long period of time. Some of it is pretty steep terrain without any easy access unless through private property for some areas. If I lived near this area on a permanent basis I would be inclined to want to know a lot more.

Did anyone attend the meeting or write regarding this project? Picked up The Flume but didn't see anything on this topic.
