So why are phonebooks still regularly delivered to most American households every year? The answer is a mix of commercial self-interest (for yellow pages) and government regulation (for white pages).

But there's one important thing that many people don't know: if you don't use the phonebook, you can opt out online.

You likely can't opt out where I live. With bank mailboxes, they just toss a bunch on top. I doubt they even look at the address. They all end up on the ground, and then in the trash or as target practice. Very few if any take them in our neighborhood.

Personally I would rather look up a business in the YP rather than using the internet.
