DENVER - A Colorado native was killed on Mount Everest, his wife confirmed Sunday.

Tom Taplin, a documentary filmmaker from Evergreen, Colorado and Santa Monica, California died when an earthquake-induced avalanche hit the Everest base camp Saturday, his wife Cory Freyer confirmed to ABC News.

Taplin, 61, had been on the mountain for almost four weeks working on his documentary on Everest, through his TET Films & Photography company.

The magnitude-7.8 quake struck at around noon Saturday - just over a year after the deadliest avalanche on record hit Everest, killing 16 Sherpa guides on April 18, 2014.
