SEDALIA — Faced with protests from homeowners with solar arrays, the Intermountain Rural Electric Association on Tuesday decided to delay moving forward with new solar energy rates.
IREA, Colorado's largest electric cooperative, proposed changing the credit it pays for electricity put on the grid by solar panels and adding a charge on the top energy use for each solar household.
More than 30 customers spoke to the board. All criticized the plan.
At stake is the payback for expensive solar arrays and the risk of much higher bills, homeowners said.
But at 12.3 cents a kilowatt-hour, IREA has among the highest net-metering credits in the state, and the increase in solar installations is not sustainable, said Patrick Mooney, the association's general manager.
