Several Safeway grocery stores in Colorado and California were targeted in a credit card skimming attack, cybercrime blog Krebs on Security reported Wednesday.
Safeway is investigating the breaches, which was limited to a "handful of stores," spokesman Brian Dowling told Krebs on Security. Bank sources cited by Krebs tie the breaches to locations in Arvada, Conifer, Denver, Englewood and Lakewood in Colorado, and in Castro Valley and Menlo Park in California.
Dowling told Krebs that the checkout pin pads are inspected regularly and that skimmers have been found on a limited and small scale.
Citing unnamed banking sources, Krebs reported that consumers' debit accounts were drained of cash at ATMs following a trip to Safeway.
