"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

NATURE: Shooting of Off-Duty Sheriff’s Deputy
CASE NUMBER: 16-3633

Aurora, Colorado-Aurora Police are investigating a shooting that left an off-duty sheriff’s deputy seriously injured.
On January 26th at around 7:20p.m. Aurora Police were dispatched to a report of a shooting at The Courtyards at Buckley Apartments which is located at 17396 East Adriatic Drive.

Upon arrival officers located an adult male victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot. The victim, who is an off-duty Sheriff’s Deputy with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries.
Investigators believe that the victim was approached by two male subjects in the parking lot. They confronted the victim in an attempt to commit a robbery. During the confrontation shots were fired striking the victim who then returned fire striking one of the subjects. Both males then fled the area. The suspect that was shot was later found in the nearby area. He was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening wounds.

Police quickly established a perimeter of the surrounding area and a thorough house to house search was conducted by members of the Aurora Police SWAT Team, K-9 Unit, Denver Police Department including their Air Support Unit, Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. At around 12:15a.m. Officers finished their search. They did not locate the 2nd suspect who remains at large.

As a precaution Rangeview High School was placed on lockdown by officers until they were confident there was no safety concerns for the students, parents and faculty inside.

Police are not releasing the name of the suspect due to the fact that he is a juvenile, nor are they releasing the name of the injured Deputy. The only description available of the at-large suspect is that he is a black male who was wearing a brown jacket at the time of the shooting.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about this case to call Agent Matt Ingui with the Major Crimes/Homicide Unit at 303-739-6067 or Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867. Tipsters who call Crime Stoppers and remain anonymous and be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000.
