From the Jeffco Sheriff's Office :

Portion of US 285 Renamed for Fallen JeffCo Sergeant
“Sgt. Sean P. Renfro Memorial Highway” to be Unveiled

At 10 a.m. this Wednesday, Sept. 14, a special ceremony will be held to unveil a memorial sign designating a seven mile stretch of US Highway 285 as the “Sergeant Sean P. Renfro Memorial Highway.”

The dedication ceremony will be held at mile marker 245 on the southbound side of US 285, four miles north of where Sgt. Renfro was tragically killed on January 3, 2015. Off duty at the time, Sgt. Renfro had stopped to offer assistance to passengers of a single vehicle accident when a driver lost control of her vehicle, crossed the center median, and collided with the vehicle Sgt. Renfro was standing near, killing him and injuring two others at the scene.

Sheriff Shrader is appreciative of the State of Colorado’s efforts to recognize Sgt. Renfro’s legacy of selfless dedication to public service by renaming mile markers 238 through 245 of US 285 in his honor:

“Sergeant Renfro died doing what he did every day – protecting and serving the citizens of Jefferson County. He deserves to be remembered for his 15 year career and his actions that day. With the renaming of US 285, I believe he will be.”

For those attending, parking will be available along the shoulder of US 285 at the site of the ceremony, accessible from the right hand lane on the southbound side of the highway. Media is welcome and encouraged to attend the ceremony.

A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.
~Joseph Campbell

On January 3, 2013, Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Sergeant Sean Renfro was off-duty driving highway 285 with a friend when they stopped to help a motorist who'd wrecked in a snowstorm at Windy Point. Unfortunately, a car coming the opposite direction lost control on the icy road, crossed the median, and struck Sean and his friend Sam, killing Sean instantly.

At the memorial highway dedication ceremony yesterday, we heard about who Sean was as a person and the world is truly lessened for his absence. His widow Crystal Renfro hopes that these signs will serve as a reminder to please drive safely. His former football team that he coached blessed the signs with reminders they each signed.

Senator Tim Neville was who introduced the legislation requesting the memorial highway designation for Sean. He was aided by Representatives Leonard and Everett in the House. County Commissioner Don Rosier has been a tireless advocate for transportation and highway safety, he re-iterated that government can only do so much, we motorists must take responsibility and drive more carefully ourselves. He pointed out that our deputies who respond to help us only have a bright fabric vest as their protection out on the roads to keep them safe. Please watch out for them and help them get home to their families each night.

Life is precious and fleeting. It's how we live that defines us and Sgt Sean Renfro lived his life so incredibly well. He will be missed by his family, his colleagues, and this community.

I think that we all do heroic things, but hero is not a noun, it's a verb.

"Heroes represent the best of ourselves, respecting that we are human beings. A hero can be anyone from Gandhi to your classroom teacher, anyone who can show courage when faced with a problem. A hero is someone who is willing to help others in his or her best capacity."
