What is the Citizens' Academy?

The Citizen Academy is a program designed to provide Jefferson County residents firsthand information about how their sheriff's office works, in an interactive classroom setting. Academy classes are held one night a week for 10 weeks, from 6 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The academy is held at the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Headquarters in Golden, Colorado.

Spring 2017 Citizens' Academy applications are due February 24. See the application at the link below.

Why host a Citizens' Academy?
The academy is designed to increase understanding between citizens and the sheriff's office through education. Our intent is to help participants get acquainted with law enforcement's role in the criminal justice system, and provide increased understanding of the tasks deputy sheriffs face daily. With better understanding, we hope to establish a close partnership with the people we serve, thereby making it easier to find realistic solutions to neighborhood problems.

Who teaches academy classes?
The instructors are deputies and personnel from the sheriff's office who teach in their own areas of expertise. Each has years of training and experience in their subjects. The deputies also bring street experience into the classroom.

What subjects are included?
The initial session will include an introduction and welcome. In the weeks that follow, topics will include information on specific units, including Patrol, Public Affairs, SWAT, Investigations and Detention Services. Law enforcement issues discussed include child abuse, use of force, community policing and domestic violence. During the academy there will also be demonstrations from our K-9s, SORT Team, Bomb Squad, as well as other special units.

How do I apply?
Applicants submit interest by completing and submitting the Citizens' Academy application. The Spring 2017 academy application is due February 24. Spring classes run from the week of March 15 through May 17.

Selected participants will be notified with their expected class date. All applicants must be residents of Jefferson County and be at least 18 years of age. A background check will be conducted on each applicant. The Sheriff's Office reserves the right to deny entry to the academy.

There is no fee for the academy.
Citizens' Academy Alumni Association

All graduates of the Academy are invited to join the Sheriff's Office Citizens' Academy Alumni Association. JeffCo CA3 was formed in 2006 to create an organization that furthers education in law enforcement, criminal justice and other associated fields and provides an opportunity for its members to support the Sheriff's Office as community volunteers.

The ongoing education program consists of 6 general meetings held every other month on the third Thursday. Some of the meetings include various tours of Jefferson County partners. Volunteer opportunities are also available to remain connected with the Sheriff's Office and include events such as Sheriff's Office Safety Fair and Christmas Crusade for Children.

For more information, and to get involved please contact the JeffCo CA3 Chair, Nancy Mayer at 303-271-5578 or by email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
