Law Enforcement Seeks Information Related to South Park District #56 Wildfire
Pueblo, Colorado, March 27, 2017 – U.S. Forest Service fire personnel and Park County resources responded to a wildfire within the Pike National Forest in Lost Park area of Park County, Colorado. This wildfire started on March 17 and burned approximately 308 acres.
Investigators determined the wildfire was human caused due to recreational shooting. This vehicle and person of interest may be associated with the fire. The vehicle appears to be a silver extended cab Chevrolet pick-up with tinted rear windows and a brush guard.
Law enforcement officers have made no arrests and the case remains under investigation. The South Park Ranger District does not have a designated shooting range. In general, recreational shooting is allowed on most National Forest System lands. However, discharging a firearm is always prohibited within 150 yards of a residence, building, campsite, developed recreation site, a cave, across or on a road or a body of water, or in any manner or place whereby any person or property is exposed to injury or damage.
People responsible for starting a wildfire can be punishable by a class B misdemeanor, by a fine or imprisonment, or both; and held responsible for fire suppression costs, which can be substantial.
