The heavy rains have stopped in California but the risk of additional mudslides still exists where wildfires scorched thousands of acres. The mudslides destroyed as many as 100 homes and damaged about 300 more. The American Red Cross is on the ground, providing safe shelter and other services for people impacted by the disaster.

Mandatory evacuation orders remain in place for more than 6,000 homes in Santa Barbara and Los Angeles counties. Damage assessment is being done from the air as access to the area is difficult. A major rescue team, the Coast Guard, National Guard and law enforcement are aiding in the recovery effort. Power and water service are out in several areas, highways remain closed and a main rail line between Santa Barbara and Carpinteria has suspended service.

Overnight, almost 30 people stayed in 3 Red Cross shelters. Trained Red Cross disaster workers are also providing health and mental health services. If someone needs to find a shelter, they can call 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767), visit redcross.org, or download the free Red Cross Emergency App. The Emergency App is available in app stores by searching for the American Red Cross or going to redcross.org/apps. They can also check with their local officials or monitor local media for information on where to find a shelter.

Deadly Mudslides Are Sweeping Through Parts Of California And It’s Truly Tragic
After what has seemed like an endless bout of brutal natural disasters, California faces yet another worrisome situation: deadly mudslides. In Santa Barbara County, heavy amounts of rainfall have caused mudslides that have killed 15 people so far. Officials estimate that hundreds of homes have been damaged and there are several cases of missing persons throughout the area. Here’s the latest on this heartbreaking situation:

Heavy rainfall on Tuesday morning caused a rush of mud and debris downhill in the Santa Barbara area of California.
Just weeks after the devastating wildfires, the community of Montecito now faces extreme property damage and in the worst cases, loss of life.
It's estimated that 15 people have died so far, while several others have been misplaced by the mudslide. Officials estimate 100 houses have been damaged, dozens of which were swept away altogether.
Those that experienced the disaster described a river of mud that swept away virtually everything in its path. Rescuers are still searching for any misplaced persons.

Hundreds of residents are on edge as they await news of loved ones who may have been lost in the wake of these mudslides. Parts of the 101 Freeway are closed until further notice.
Our hearts are with those affected by the devastating mudslides in California and we are grateful for the rescuers working tirelessly to minimize damage.
