Buena Vista-area wildfire threatens homes
POSTED 2:05 PM, APRIL 1, 2018, BY MICHAEL KONOPASEK, UPDATED AT 09:47 PM, APRIL 1, 2018
CHAFFEE COUNTY, Colo. -- Officials reported a wildfire near Buena Vista was 60 percent contained late Sunday.
The Easter blaze forced people from their homes. No injuries or structure damage were reported.
Jeff McGinnis, a former firefighter, was notified of a pre-evacuation alert for his home Sunday afternoon.
The McGinnis family and their neighbors’ Easter holiday was interrupted by the threat of wind-driven flames.
“We went to Easter lunch and then got a notice on the phone that our area was under pre-evacuation notice,” McGinnis said.
The roughly 27-acre fire proved to be a stubborn one for firefighters. Crews spent the afternoon attacking the flames.
The evacuations served as a reminder that the dry Colorado weather could set many up for an exhausting wildfire season.
“I think it’s a good heads-up for everybody across the state this year that wildfire season is here,” McGinnis said.
McGinnis, who has lived in the area for more than 25 years, said this is the first time he’s been placed on standby to get out.
Evacuations were ordered for residents living west of County Road 321 between County Roads 323 and 326.

Red Cross Prepares and opens an evacuation Center for any who Families needed a place to wait out and get more
details on fire. Luckily no homes were damaged or destroyed and later on that day families could go back to their
homes. As we waited it out, some folks came in looking for details on the fire, and 1 sweet lady from a restaurant
business came in and offered out brownies that she had made to us and those fighting the fire. We met up with the
Emergency Services who was totally on top of it all, very nice people. Want to say Thanks to all Helped out that Day.
