Staunton State Park is pleased to report that major funding has been approved for the design process for what will be the longest waterslide in Colorado. The slide will be custom constructed out of inflatable canvas, similar to that used in the typical bouncy-houses, and will be positioned from the base of Lions Head and travel down Lions Back Trail before depositing thrill seekers into the Elk Falls Pond.
The water needed to run in the slide will be pumped up from North Elk Creek and stored in a large water tower atop Lions Head, painted green to blend in with the surrounding forest. It’s estimated the 4000’ slide, perhaps the longest in the United States, will require 1,800 gallons of water per hour to operate. Water from the slide will be recycled. It will gravity flow into Elk Creek Pond, travel downstream to the pumping station and then back up to the Lions Back Trail to the slide’s starting point.
An average waterslide takes about 30-60 seconds, but it is anticipated Staunton’s slide users will have a full 3 minutes of sliding excitement.
This will be the first of several future improvements planned for Staunton State Park. Also in the planning stages are a cable car system up to the summit of Staunton Rocks and a zip line back down to the new visitor center.
If you have questions, concerns or comments, please remember that today is APRIL FOOLS DAY, and something like this will never happen at Staunton State Park.
