News Release: U. S. Forest Service Discusses Potential Public Access Closure

19 Sep 2019 16:19 #1 by Mountain-News-Events
September 18, 2019, Evergreen, Colorado – In recent weeks, Trout Unlimited and other conservation and sportsmen’s organizations have learned that the Forest Service is considering selling its Specialty Pack String property located near Shawnee on the South Platte Ranger District. While an administrative property, the Pack String parcel along the North Fork of the South Platte provides a significant public benefit by enabling some of the only public angling on the river in this area.

The Rocky Mountain Specialty Pack String property of the USFS provides public fishing access to the North Fork of the South Platte River. Whole or partial Closure and sale of the property, will result in Colorado residents and visitors not being able to access this premium section of river. The river currently holds a population of rainbow trout, brown trout, brook trout and the occasional tiger trout.

Current discussion includes the sale of the administrative property in 2022, after public comment. Now is the time to make your voice heard.

“Like so many of the efforts championed by Trout Unlimited, this isn’t about today. It is about having healthy streams and recreational access for generations to come” said Mike McGinnis, President, Evergreen chapter of Trout Unlimited. “Revenue from the sale of the property today won’t make up for the debt we feel to the generations that follow if we allow this opportunity to be taken from them.”

Public comments regarding this issue may be sent to Diana Trujillo, Forest Supervisor, Pike & San Isabel National Forests and Cimarron & Comanche National Grasslands, 2840 Kachina Drive, Pueblo, CO 81008.
