Consider purchasing a smart or programmable thermostat. The most popular models cost around $200, but reduce heating and cooling use by an estimated 10% to 15% and pay for themselves within two years.
Reevaluate your home’s temperature. Lowering your thermostat 7 to 10 degrees while you’re out of the house can save you up to 10% each year.
Reduce heat loss through your fireplace by keeping the damper closed when you don’t have a fire going. Plug and seal the chimney flue if you don’t use your fireplace.
Add insulation. Most homes in IREA’s service territory should have a minimum rating of R38 to R60 in the attic – about 13” to 20” of loose-fill, blown-in insulation. Consider fully insulating your garage and the walls of any crawl spaces.
Add caulk or weather-stripping to seal air leaks in your home – often around pipes, outlets, dryer vents and unfinished spaces. Reduce window drafts with clear plastic film and double-sided tape. Seal the film tightly with a hair dryer.
Have your heating system serviced to keep it operating efficiently. Change the furnace filter as recommended.
Do you use a baseboard heater, space heater or other non-furnace system for winter warmth? You can reduce energy costs associated with these systems by slightly changing the ways you use them. Visit
