WILDLIFE CRIME ALERT - BAILEY/CROOKED TOP MOUNTAIN
PLEASE SHARE
Last weekend (~9/28 - 9/30) near Harris Park/Deer Creek Campground, a cow moose that our community has watched and loved for years laid down to slowly and painfully die after she was brutally gut shot three times from behind. Her two calves (one ~1.5-2 years old, one younger) are now orphaned.
Disturbingly, this is not the first wildlife crime in this exact area. Three years ago, neighbors reported similar incidents near the Deer Creek Campground turnaround (8470-8480 County Road 43), including a pig being killed and disemboweled.
Whether connected or not, this location has seen repeated wildlife crimes.
IF YOU:
Heard gunshots in or around that area last weekend
Saw suspicious activity or unfamiliar vehicles
Have trail cam/security footage
Know ANYTHING (those shots were loud and probably late)
NOTE:
We hear gunshots plenty, but there's a good chance this occurred at night. I remember hearing 3 loud shots one night long after the kids were asleep (12am? later?) while I was working late at the computer. It actually caused me to step outside and check what the heck was going on. This was actually the second time I've hear someone shooting a handful of rounds well into the night within the past month. Plenty of us shoot, but not past dark.
If you have a neighbor shooting well past sunset, into the night, this might be related. Violating noise ordinance like that is cause enough to report.
We don't know if this was in or directly by Harris Park, it could have been in surrounding neighborhoods. There's a chance she was shot some distance away before laying down where she died. We live along a beautiful valley that can carry sound for quite a ways.
This moose family was a cherished part of our community. Someone knows something.

(I know we all probably had a name for her, but thought this was OK for the email)
