CinnamonGirl's topic about terrible US road designs got me to thinking about our local roads and intersections. I thought this might of been a bit off topic from her topic, so I'm opening a new one. But CG, if it fits in yours, feel free to merge this...
What local roads or intersections do you find dumb, dangerous, speed trap, or other?
I'll nominate the recently completed intersection of CR-72 (driving from the baseball fields) to 285 North (heading northwest at that point, east of Crow Hill) as being very dangerous. There isn't a merge lane (just a small shoulder) and traffic on 285 is behind and above you. It's very difficult to see the cars and figure out which lane the oncoming 285 traffic is in. In late afternoon, there is the sun too.
Can anything be done to fix this, or am I wrong about it? I worry about a serious accident there.
I don't like either the North or South bound merge lanes there and tend to stay in the left lane when driving that part of 285 so there isn't a problem. We live on the south side of Crow Hill so we have to deal with both sides of it.
Getting onto 470 from 285 NB stinks - can't those stupid people getting onto 285 NB look to see who's getting on - flying off the exit doesn't seem to be very safe!
What about trying to get of C470 Westbound to 285 Southbound? You've got to go from 65 to 25 (in a lane that people are accelerating to get onto 470) so that you don't end up in the lake.
There's a crazy intersection in Blackhawk. In order to get into the parking lot for one of the casinos, you have to drive towards the oncoming traffic. :VeryScared:
How about the intersection at 285 and where you turn to get to Coney Island? That is pretty dangerous.
On the south side of Hoosier Pass, there is a turn from Hiway 9 to County Road 4 (the upper portion). If you are traveling north on 9 and turning, it isn't that big a deal to make, but if you are traveling south, down the pass, it is tough. It is almost a hairpin turn from 9 to the county road and on a curve and going down hill. In the winter it is real scary 'cuz both roads can be slick. People coming up 4 and turning north onto 9 have it tough, too. Again, almost a hairpin turn from a dirt road to pavement, with curves below and above you. And if the pavement is at all slick, whoever is on 9 coming up on you has to slow down a lot and wait for you to get traction and get going.
