I have been concerned lately about the increase of data collection on anyone that has a presence on the internet, regardless of what it is: a website, an email, or a social network account…
Data scrapping is here. Now that Google and other search engines & internet databases are archiving everything you put out there, your data (or unknown data about you) is becoming more & more valuable and sold out for profit everyday! The worst offenders are the public information gatherers that resell for a fee to anyone what only professionals like lawyers use to ask for, for free. For example, anybody can find out, when & where you were married, when you were divorced, how many children you had, who is related to you, and how many pieces of real estate you have owned during your lifetime and the correct phone numbers at these locations.
Companies like Intelius, Spokeo, 123people, USsearch, Peoplefinders, etc. are the worst offenders. They will sell anything from a phone number or email address for $9.95 to $19.95 or a full profile for as much as $99.95!
Public information under the freedom of information act is just that, public.
The problem is that data scrapping research companies now specialize in finding out everything there is to know about you before you get that job, at the service of your prospective employer. Watch what you are posting on social networks! George Orwell 1984? We are just a few years behind.
Protect yourself; use a nickname or avatar, a fake birthday and one or several of those free email addresses (Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail, Juno). And if you want to voice your opinion, or say something nasty about your neighbor or political representative, do it from an internet café from a borrowed laptop with somebody else avatar
More important, you can opt out of most but not all of those people finders/gatherers of personal information. Thanks to the Wall Street Journal and the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, here are the links:
