In Windows XP we found some conflicts between the new version of AVG 2011 Free Antivirus (available from [url=http://www.download.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;]www.download.com[/url]) and the old version of Zone Alarm. Zone Alarm is aware of it and will release a new version soon. Meanwhile uninstall Zone Alarm from the control panel with the "add remove software" and turn on the Windows XP firewall.
At this time I recommend Free antivirus available from [url=http://www.download.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;]www.download.com[/url] "AVG 2011 Free" or "AVAST". Paying software AVG 2011,TrendMicro or Kaspersky.
McAfee has been useless with some of the latest viruses. Norton is expensive, bulky & slows down your machine.
I uninstalled AVG because it slows down my machine at home. It's a ram hog.
I would rather run Zonealarm without antivirus. The firewall will stop almost all virus from getting into the machine in the first place - unless you open e-mail from unknown senders.
