This song is from an album called Sleigh Ride, Jingle Bells by the Christmas Caroleers. We listened and listened to this record when we were growing up and loved it. My mom found the record in a $1 bin sometime after I left home and joined the military, and though I haven't listened to it as much as I did when I was younger, it is still my favorite. A couple of other songs on it are "There's a Hole in My Christmas Stocking" and "Mama Santa's Surprize".
Anyways, this song is called "The Little Elf" and even though I can't convey the melody to you, the words are very meaningful.
Up in Santa’s workshop, everything was fine
All the elves were busy, working overtime
Then without a warning, the tiniest elf of all
Took his little hammer and flung it through the wall
When Santa asked him why, this was his replay:
I’m just a little elf making all these Christmas toys
For all those little girls and boys to find beneath the tree
But who’s making toys for me?
I’m not a selfish elf, but with all the toys I make
Santa Claus, for Christmas sake, surely you’ll agree
There should be a toy for me.
Santa Claus was speechless, he didn’t know what to say
No elf in all of toyland, had ever felt this way
He thought the whole thing over
Then smiling merrily, he picked the little elf up
And put him in his knee.
He pat the elf and said, then old Santa said:
You’re too young to know it yet
But listen well and don’t forget
The greatest gift that you can get
Is when you’re giving joy
To some little girl or boy
And now the little elf
Makes more toys than all the rest
And he always does his best
Even though he’s small
And because he believes
It’s better to give
Than receive
He’s the greatest Elf
Of them all
