A true story and food for thought

Let’s start way back.

My cousin Alfred’s grandfather on his mother’s side was a hopeless alcoholic. This man had seven children and did not provide for them. He was a lost cause. However, from this broken man’s family came two grandsons, Charles and Alfred. Both young men are brilliant with Charles leading the way in medicine and science. Their work has truly had an impact on the health community in a global sense.

Okay back in 1994ish, I was in NYC with my cousin Alfred. (Alfred was beginning his internship at a teaching hospital in NYC and terrorists were bombing banks). I don’t know why I just told you that, but I just did.

Anyway, we decided to go out to dinner but before leaving the house Alfred loaded his pockets with change.
I asked Alfred why are your carrying so much change? His answer was that whenever he was approached by a person asking for money, he would give them some. He said, “I give them change because you never know who in the family line will become a major contributor to society.”

Oh I cannot wait to see your response to this little story.

Grace

Doctor J. Vernon McGee (Pastor) says that all money is God’s money and when he would give someone money he would not judge how they spent it. It is for God to judge. He went on to say that if the man bought a drink, then he bought a drink and that is that.

OH I can’t wait to read your thoughts.

Walking down Pearl Street the other day with a friend, a guy asks us for spare change. I tell him I didn't have any. Further down, there is a very talented musician playing a very interesting home-made instrument, and there's a bowl in front of him. I drop in two dollars.

My friend asks, "why did you give HIM money, and not the other guy?"

I said, "effort. One was apparently making zero effort to improve his quality of life, and the musician was at least 'doing' something to earn money."

My mom listens to J. Vernon McGee.

I like your story. I'm careful with who I donate to. I carry extra dollar bills this time of the year for the bell ringers. There was one guy that used to dance and do crazy sign language stuff at the corner of Santa Fe and Mississippi that I always gave my extra change to. He definitely worked for his cash. I found out later that several of my co-workers and my son and his friends gave extra change to that guy for the same reason!

Merry Christmas!
