PARK COUNTY - The Colorado Department of Transportation has been called in to help clean up a rockslide on U.S. Highway 285 near Kenosha Pass.
The Colorado State Patrol says the rockslide happened overnight along the highway at mile marker 204. That is between Bailey and Jefferson in unincorporated Park County, near Kenosha Pass.
According to initial reports, five to six large rocks fell in the area. Troopers say no cars were hit by the rock fall, but CDOT was called in to clean up the debris. CDOT has also activated signs in the area to warn motorists of the rock fall, but the state patrol says the highway remains open.
Sounds like nature laid out an obstacle course. I find it somewhat surprising to have a rock slide happen this time of the year. Normally, spring thawing and freezing of melt water facilitates rocks slides. I'm sure they will monitor the area especially closely in the spring, as the present rock slide signals a potential major failure (zone of weakness) exists in the hillside.
i remember in years past kenosha having a lot more snow for good snowshoeing. nice to have a winter with some warm for family to trek about and see the moose, who are still hanging about instead of moving down to lower areas. guess this is one of the side effects.
