The buttstock was hollow and metallic. It was pumped by hand. The British absolutely hated the air rifle in the Revolutionary War because it was a silent sniper rifle. The few remaining original rifles are beautiful pieces of craftsmanship. They were made by various riflesmiths in many of the colonies.
I read about these in the Smithsonian years ago and was fascinated. I didn't get to see them in operation or learn about their use in the Revolutionary War until now.
