How bout a few camping stories from everyone ?
from this local area only, please.
Here's mine:
Way back when were young rock climbers Me and my buddy Matt grabbed our good looking neighbors and took off for Buffalo campground. Matt was trying to hook up with one of the girls so he was on a mission that weekend.
We got our site. set up, then took a quik jaunt down to Wellington for some hiking and swimming.
Things were going well for all of us, the girls had never been to this area and were enjoying the sunshine, swimming, quiet fresh air and fine company.
That night, a crystal clear evening, the libations flowed freely. The women whipped up an fitting feast. Lively conversation with a midnite walk seeing the stars and a meteor shower in full throttle. We were in heaven.
As the night cooled off my buddy Matt and his prospective honey had some time of it trying to find level ground for their zipped together sleeping bags.
Matt would take the downhill side of the bag but every time his honey moved they'd start a rolling towards the fire !
The rest of us were in stitches watching this comedy.
After what seemed to be an eternity of cussing all was quiet.
Then during the evening a strange smell woke me up. As i peeked around rubbing my eyes, saw the fire embers still glowing and so was Matt and honey's sleeping bag at his feet ! I thought I was dreaming but it was for real. Next thing ya know he starts yelling and jumps up tries to run, falls down, his feet poking thru the charred bottom dragging his girl all around the campsite ! Reminded me of Lil Rascals when they were running away from camp feet sticking thru the sleeping bag getting hit by lightning. He sounded like an Indian doing a war dance and his girl yelling at him to sit down -she was still stuck in the bag with him ! The neighbors woke up saw this big thing in dim light started screaming 'there's a bear, a bear in camp'!
Me and my girl wide eyed, laughing at this whole spectacle , Matt trying to pour left over beers on his bag.
Finally the torment was over. His girl clambered out, called him some kinda name I never heard before and stormed into a tent we a had set up in case of rain.Matt sat dejected by the now useless sleeping bag rubbing his feet cursing the fire, nodding towards the tent .
When I woke up at sunrise What a paradox. I found Matt in the dirt passed out by the fire, his feet black from the discarded charred bag. The others so peacefully sleeping in their comfy bags and tent, I started laughing out loud...
Matt turned slowly and said ' She ain't talking to me so Let's go climbing " He was well known for his Gung-Ho early morning starts, no matter what the previous nites escapades were.
i quietly told my girl and her friends to sleep in and meet us later at the Bucksnort for lunch, we'll be in the Classic area climbing. And with a nice smooch we were off.
Driving up 550, I dared to ask "How's your feet ?.
"I'll be fine, they're just alittle red " he said rubbing some lotion on 'em.
At the rock, two climbers were ahead of us so we waited, Matt thinking out loud as he squeezed into his rock shoes, painfully "Maybe she doesn't remember, Maybe I'll tell her it was just a dream ?"
I said " yeah, more like a nightmare !"
"...We'll never hook up now she thinks I'm an idiot, ohhhh woe is me..." He moaned.
'Ahh young lust,' I chuckled.
We couldn't wait any longer. Matt started up, climbed like he'd slept for a week, lightning fast !
We caught up to the other climbers on the wall, since we were going faster we asked to pass , "no problem " Good.
At that point one of them exclaimed 'ck out those girls skinny dipping !" pointing down to S. Elk creek.
We scanned some boulder in the creek bed and lo and behold looking like a vision from a jungle girl fantasy, our girls, quite naked.Waving and splashin around, yelling 'Yooo Hooooo' up to us.
The dudes thought they were yellin at them !
I said "easy boys, they're with us"
Their excitement turned to " Sorry man "
"No prob, we appreciate it"
"cept me" Matt griped as he climbed past, up out of sight.
The climb accomplished, we hit the creek, met the girls and fortunately all was forgiven for Matt. My girl had smoothed things over for them.
After a fine lunch and some pool at the Bucksnort we had alot of laughs about the previous nites escapade.
We went back to our camp and had some explaining to do to the Camp host and our neighbors........
