FRANKTOWN - Several homes have been evacuated after a 50-acre fire broke out near Franktown.

The fire is burning near some residences, but there is no reason to think the blaze is threatening them currently, says the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. They say the fire is mostly burning trees at this point.

According to deputies, the nearest intersection to the fire is Highway 86 and Highway 83.

Homes are being evacuated in the north side of The Pinery. Automated emergency phone calls are going out to residents in the area.

Grass fires can move very quickly, and can be very dangerous. Here is an excellent video that explains them better to those of us who are more used to fires in the brush/trees.

After watching this video, I will never again think 'It's just a grass fire'.

I was just at the top of Smoky hill a few minutes ago. The wind was pretty bad and you could see the smoke out east.

Thanks for the video. Good reminders.
