UPDATE- ringworm cases RESOLVED at IMHS

22 Dec 2011 15:19 #1 by IMHS
We're pleased to report that after 5 1/2 weeks, our ringworm isolation ward is now empty and all patients have been adopted or moved to the adoption floor, with our last remaining patient transfered into foster care.

As most of you are aware, we have had 5 cats in our isolation ward undergoing oral and topical treatments, and regular culturing (diagnostic test) since mid-November. Four of those patients made terrific progress in the first month of treatment, and 3 were recently adopted into new forever homes!

Two of the kittens remain in our care...sweet Aston and Martin. Martin has healed beautifully and today was dipped and moved out to the adoption floor, where he is happily playing in his new digs and waiting for a home. Aston, our only long-haired patient, has been more of a challenge to treat but has made great progress. Today he was shaved and given a medicated bath, and sent into a foster home experienced in the care of ringworm patients to continue the last stretch of his treatment period.

We are so, so grateful for the support we've received from the community while we've weathered this little storm. From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU for the donations of bleach, paper towels, new mops and brooms, protective smocks, cash to help with our expenses through the past several weeks, and in-kind donations of other supplies to help support this effort.

While we hope to have turned the corner on ringworm forever, realistically we know that as with other routine illnesses that humane societies must deal with from time to time, it could pay us another visit. If that happens, we'll deal with it as we have in this case: assess the needs of each individual in our care, isolate as necessary, determine a treatment plan, and move forward in our commitment to provide the best care possible for each individual animal, looking towards the light at the end of the tunnel...and relying on community support, as always, to achieve our mission.

THANK YOU again, and happy holidays to everyone!

Great news!

Nice to see the shelter could stay open and continue to adopt while still being able to seperate and treat the 5 sick cats without the ringworm spreading to other animals.

I know that due to the nature of the "business" another episode of ringworm could occur in the future, and by then the shelter should have its surgical and isolation room up and running. That should help a lot.

Great job IMHS!

Excellent news, thank you for letting us know! Great job on handling all of that, with seeming ease!

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther
