IMHS Clinic Performs Landmark 100th Surgery
Dewey the kitten was running on empty when a good Samaritan scooped him up at a local gas station earlier this week, and the lucky feline is now somewhat of a celebrity as he is the 100th animal to receive surgery in the Intermountain Humane Society (IMHS) veterinary clinic. The landmark surgery took place Saturday, June 30th.
“Dewey’s neuter surgery is the 100th to be performed by the IMHS all-volunteer veterinary staff,” said Marta Anderson, IMHS Shelter Director, “He will never contribute to the cat and dog overpopulation crisis and we’re very grateful to everyone who has made a contribution to this lifesaving work.”
The clinic opened on February 18th and has reached this milestone thanks to the volunteer IMHS team of Dave O'Brien DVM, Mitch Zale, DVM, and Cappy O'Brien, CVT. The in-house clinic saves IMHS much-needed funds as well as the transport-related stress on the shelter animals.
“Our veterinary team bends over backwards to make time to perform these surgeries on a pro bono basis,” stated Anderson, “but they also literally have to bend to reach our old surgery table. We desperately need a new adjustable surgery table to save their backs while saving animals.”
A new adjustable surgery table would cost about $7,000, and IMHS is hoping a compassionate supporter will step forward to provide the needed funds. IMHS is also seeking additional volunteer certified veterinary technicians and veterinarians to help with surgeries.
The clinic operates on weekends and has not only spayed and neutered adoptable puppies, kittens, dogs, and cats but also “fixed” some feral cats and provided lifesaving surgeries to correct maladies such as tumor removal, suturing of open wounds, and amputations.
Feral cats are now being accepted on an appointment basis, and IMHS offers the use of humane box traps and trapping/feral cat management education to the community.
Intermountain Humane Society is a private, non-profit organization that receives no government funding and relies solely on donations and community support to serve its mission. IMHS is located at 67318 US Hwy 285 S in Pine Junction.
