It Takes A Village To Help Homeless Dogs
IMHS Volunteers Raise New Canine Play-yard

Volunteers with Intermountain Humane Society (IMHS) have dug post holes, poured cement, and erected the skeleton of the new “Kyjen Play Yard for Puppies and Special Needs Dogs.”

Kyjen, Inc, a Centennial, CO-based company specializing in products that keep dogs active and engaged, provided funding for the yard and dedicated dog-lovers from the community are supplying the labor. IMHS needed a space where toy breed dogs, injured/senior dogs, and puppies can enjoy outside off-leash time.

Natalie Noll, the volunteer assistant manager of the IMHS Second Chance Thrift Shop, coordinated the labor for construction of the play yard by reaching out to the community to ask for help through the use of social media. Local residents responded by donating supplies or rolling up their sleeves to help. The new Moore Lumber and Hardware store in Pine, CO provided a generous contractor’s discount on the materials needed for the project.

“It’s extremely exciting to see the play yard coming together for our small breeds and special-needs homeless dogs,” said IMHS Shelter Director Marta Anderson, “These kind and talented volunteers are building more than a structure because they are really laying the groundwork for IMHS to be able to help more elderly, tiny, or injured dogs to recuperate, exercise, and improve behavior while we work to find their new lifetime home.”

Kyjen, Inc also provided IMHS with a nice supply of their renowned puzzle toys that keep dogs active trying to figure out how to access food hidden in compartments or otherwise manipulate the objects. These "smart" dog toys, selected from the Kyjen.com website, include rawhide weave bones, Hide-A-Squirrel toys, fleecy balls for puppies, and plush squeaky toys. IMHS dogs now relax on Kyjen Instinct Nesting Beds, which are specifically designed to support the natural resting condition of dogs. Kyjen also provided IMHS with a CD player so special psycho-acoustically arranged piano music now calms and de-stresses the dogs.
